The Dangers of Fad Diets

22 Feb 2012

The desire to lose weight fast is one that many people have. This is why fad diets are so popular. However, they can be very dangerous for your body as well as for your emotional well being. With fad diets, you are restricting the types of foods that your body gets. Most of them don't give you the right balance of vitamins and nutrients. That is why they are hard to stick to, and then a person will think that they failed. Yet the mind and body are sending messages to each other that the food supply is inadequate.

There are plenty of fad diets to choose from. Some of them limit your intake of carbs such as the Atkin's diet. Some people feel that this is a good way to lose weight but your body will crave carbs. Not all carbs are bad for you so consuming them in moderation is very important. Too many carbs though will be stored in your body as sugar. Other diets are liquid only such as the 7 day apple juice diet. No one can realistically survive on something like that.

Many young girls consume only pickle juice for breakfast and for lunch. Then they eat dinner with their family so that no red flags are raised. As a result, many schools have been alerted to this type of dieting. With fad diets, you aren't learning eating habits that are healthy. Instead, you feel deprived so it isn't long before you go back to your old eating habits.

If you did lose some weight with a fad diet, it was likely to be water weight only. That is why it all comes back as soon as you stop being involved with that particular diet plan. If you really want to lose weight and keep it off you need to make choices for healthy foods. You need to pay attention to portion size and you must get daily exercises. There is no way to cheat the system – if you want to successfully lose weight you have to work at it....
