He's back - and he's funny!
It's August 7, 1974. Secluded in the Lincoln Sitting Room of the White House on the eve of his resignation, President Richard Nixon and his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, come to terms with the consequences of their actions as they act out comic and provocative conversations with various world leaders.
First produced by Round House in 1999, Nixon's Nixon was a huge hit, with rave reviews, sold-out performances, and multiple Helen Hayes Award nominations. Edward Gero (as Nixon) and Conrad Feininger (as Kissinger) reprise their roles for this new production. Producing Artistic Director Emeritus Jerry Whiddon directs a playful satire that's just perfect for this election year.
"Round House triumphs...an energetic, live-action political cartoon with surprising undertones of sympathy and sadness...[Edward] Gero has often been excellent onstage, but he's never been this sheerly delicious. The performance is so audacious, and so much fun, that it's almost giddying: You gape as much as you laugh. Gero is partnered brilliantly with [Conrad] Feininger who, with his rigid back and cool, bespectacled gaze, makes Kissinger a menacing cartoon of ambition...If the play were just another dump-on-Nixon exercise it would go sour quickly. Instead, it turns into a meditation on loss and blasted dreams, a little lesson on the mortality of hope." - Lloyd Rose, The Washington Post (1999)
