World Premiere!
REDSHIRTS
By Dana Yeaton
Directed by Lou Bellamy
Co-produced with Penumbra Theatre of St. Paul, MN
October 17 - November 11, 2007
Round House Theatre Silver Spring, 8641 Colesville Road - Metro: Silver Spring

Critics and audiences are cheering our world premiere production of Redshirts, a play by Dana Yeaton playing at Round House Theatre Silver Spring through November 11, 2007.

"In the absorbing and suspenseful production at Round House Theatre Silver Spring, actor James T. Alfred turns Dante into 200-plus pounds of restlessness and swagger. And Alfred's is just one of the vivid performances that makes Redshirts, directed by Lou Bellamy, a seductive entertainment...the actors have such energy and presence that you can't see their characters simply as sluices for Very Important Ideas...As the soft-spoken [English Professor Dr. Charlene] Bigelow, [Regina Marie] Williams gives demureness an edge of terrifying ferocity, and James Craven is hugely watchable as her wary antagonist, the imposing, ethically compromised Coach Tyrell Moore. Ahanti Young has such a riveting, glazed-eye shtick that it becomes fascinating in itself -- you almost forget to read his character, the perennially concussed athlete Curtis Combs, as an object lesson in why football should be illegal. The actors playing the athletes smartly emphasize their characters' physicality, fidgeting, tussling and fooling around with a football at odd moments. - Celia Wren, The Washington Post

"A Potomac Stages Pick for a thought-provoking and entertaining new play...Dana Yeaton, who wrote the stage adaptation of Midwives that was so satisfyingly produced by Round House last year, has written another absorbing play featuring distinct characters caught up in interesting conflicts...Sharply drawn dialogue and personable performances, especially in the four athlete's roles, keep the production entertaining while the controversy plays out. With a colorful and energetic production, this is a world premiere of a fine new play raising intriguing issues with a mature, intelligent and well balanced approach." - Brad Hathaway, Potomac Stages

"Finally, there is a play in town that theater-loving wives and lovers can take their 'couch potato' sports-loving significant others to...for a wonderful evening of thoughtful and exciting drama...The direction by Lou Bellamy, who started the Penumbra Theatre Company, is faultless in a "you-are-there" style...highly recommended." - Bob Anthony, AllArtsReview4U.com

"The play is terrific...The battle royale between the coach and the English instructor is a dynamic exploration of intellectual integrity, fairness, and ethics, in the context of what really is best for these young men, in the short and long run...The entire production is in tip-top form and relevant." - Debbie Minter Jackson, DC Theatre Scene

"College football and basketball coaches who seldom find time for theatre should be required by their bosses to attend the play Redshirts at Round House Theatre...The compelling drama by Dana Yeaton deals with athletes, academic integrity and race at a fictional Southern university obsessed with athletic success. It wouldn't hurt, either, if these time-challenged coaches took their players with them." - George Solomon, The Washington Post, sports section
