Great Books. Unbound.

Our 08/09 season in Bethesda features two world premiere plays based on acclaimed novels, the re-invention of an eternal tale by one of today's hottest playwrights, the stage adaptation of a counter-culture classic from the 1960's and the area premiere of a wonderful new comedy. And, there's no ticket price increase. In fact, we've lowered some of our subscription prices.

How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents
World Premiere
A new play by Karen Zacarías
Based on the novel by Julia Alvarez
Directed by Blake Robison
September 17 - October 12, 2008
A sexy, sensual, and wildly theatrical adaptation of Julia Alvarez's acclaimed best-selling novel by Karen Zacarías (The Book Club Play) launches our season. Uprooted from their home in the Dominican Republic, the four Garcia sisters arrive in New York City in 1960 to find a life far different from the genteel existence of maids, manicures, and extended family they left behind. As they plunge headfirst into the American mainstream, they remain forever caught between the old world and the new. What they have lost - and what they find - is revealed in a story of assimilation, family, and America from a Hispanic perspective staged by Producing Artistic Director Blake Robison.
Blake's Take: Round House's world premiere adaptation brings all of the novel's magical realism to life, thanks to DC's favorite playwright Karen Zacarías. This Latina story is everything you've come to expect from our literary works. It's bold, provocative, political, emotional, and visually exciting. So kick off the season in style with the Garcia girls!
Please note: How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents contains nudity and adult situations.

Alice
World Premiere
Adapted and directed by Mary Hall Surface
From the novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll
November 26 - December 28, 2008
Lewis Carroll's beloved story comes to life in an imaginative new production adapted and directed especially for our stage by Mary Hall Surface. When the precocious young Alice follows a White Rabbit down his rabbit hole, she tumbles into a fantastic new world and encounters an array of curious and curiouser creatures - including a mysterious Cheshire Cat and a manic Mad Hatter. Alice enters a race with no rules, endures a zany tea-party, and journeys to a magical sea in her many adventures to reach the Queen of Hearts' illusive, beautiful garden. Ideal family entertainment, Alice will delight children with colorful escapades and characters and charm adults with Carroll's fascinating imagery and audacious wordplay.
Blake's Take: Like our other holiday shows, Alice rides the line between childhood fantasy and solid entertainment for adults. We're thrilled to welcome Mary Hall Surface, one of the nation's most creative and successful family theatre artists, to take us on Alice's journey. Bring the kids for a wildly imaginative theatrical experience.
Please note: All weekday evening performances of Alice will begin at 7 p.m.

Eurydice
By Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Derek Goldman
February 4 - March 1, 2009
New York's smash hit comes to Round House! In an emotionally powerful yet funny play, Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House, Dead Man's Cell Phone) retells the myth of Orpheus from the perspective of his beloved Eurydice. On the day she is to be married, a misstep sends Eurydice plummeting to the surreal depths of the Underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to retain memories of her lost love. With contemporary characters and ingenious plot twists, Ruhl offers a fresh spin on a timeless love story. Derek Goldman directs an Off-Broadway triumph hailed by The New York Times as “devastatingly lovely...with warmth, humor and theatrical imagination...a love letter to the world that deserves to be remembered for a good long time.” Blake's Take: D.C. is a Sarah Ruhl town! Eurydice is one of her early plays, recently re-discovered and taking the theatre community by storm. This magical canvass of language and imagery may be her most personal and deeply felt piece of theatre. And we're thrilled to bring it to area audiences.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
A play by Dale Wasserman
Based on the novel by Ken Kesey
Directed by Jerry Whiddon
April 1 - April 26, 2009
Boisterous, ribald and shattering, this stage version of Ken Kesey's novel explores a world where sanity means conformity and following the rules is the only way to survive. Playing crazy to avoid prison work detail, the brash and charismatic Randle P. McMurphy is sent to the state mental hospital for evaluation. Gleefully rebellious, he wins friends among the inmates and instigates insurrections against the tyrannical Nurse Ratched, who exercises near-total control over those in her care. Jerry Whiddon, Round House's Producing Artistic Director Emeritus, directs. Matthew Detmer (Owen Meany, The Book Club Play) returns to Round House as McMurphy to face off against Kathryn Kelley (Orson's Shadow) as Ratched.
Blake's Take: What happens when the inmate starts to run the asylum? Come watch one of our favorite actors puts his stamp on one of the theatre's most coveted and celebrated roles. In a world of conformity and technological anonymity, Cuckoo's Nest is more vital - and perhaps more American – than ever.

A Sleeping Country
By Melanie Marnich
Directed by Gregg Henry
May 27 - June 21, 2009
A dreamy new comedy about sleep lost and hope found. In New York City, a desperate woman becomes certain that she has the "Worst Insomnia in the World." In a search for answers, she travels to Venice to chase down the fabulous (and sleepless) Countess who might be a distant relative and hold the remedy to her dilemma as well as the key to her heart. Gregg Henry directs the area premiere of a humorous but poignant play about facing your fears and knowing the difference between not sleeping and being truly awake.
Blake's Take: Melanie Marnich is a scream. She writes about women in search of BIG ANSWERS. Her outlandish new comedy spans two countries and the cosmos to unlock the hidden depths of a woman's soul. And it'll keep you laughing all along the way!
